Cuba Works on Computerization of Railroad System

Camaguey, Cuba, Jul 15.- The implementation of fiber optic transmission in railroads in Cuba, which will favor an improvement in the communications system of that means of transport, is expected to culminate this year up to the province of Camagüey, and subsequently spread to Santiago de Cuba.Links via cellular technology will allow continuous communication between trains, dispatch offices and stations, to thereby issue track orders, which regulate all movement of trains, with greater security than that offered by the way currently used, with a high degree of obsolescence.

According to Enrique Valdes, director of the Eastern-Central Railroad Company, which covers the provinces of Ciego de Avila, Camagüey and Las Tunas, and attached to the Cuban Railroad Association (UFC), at a recent meeting in this city with youngsters of this sector in the aforementioned territories, the computerization project in the railway system is valued at about 40 million dollars.

He also noted that, in general, the country plans to invest about 1.3 billion dollars in the modernization of the sector between 2016 and 2021.

Cuba was the first Latin American country to have trains and seventh in the world to use them. (can)
