Cuba to face tough challenge in basketball qualifier

HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 7 (acn) Cuba already has its rivals in the Americas qualifier to the men´s World Basketball Championship of China (from August 31 to September 15, 2019) and they will be Puerto Rico, Mexico and the United States, which will not use his NBA players.

Despite being in the toughest group of the tournament, Cuba expects to have a good result, based on the experience of several of its players currently participating in foreign leagues

The NBA told FIBA months ago that it would not stop the competition for the Americas WC qualifying tournament. Therefore, the players of the Development League will be the ones who will represent their country.

The Americas contest will be attended by 16 teams and will grant 7 tickets to the WC.

The qualifiers of the American continent will extend from November 2017 to February 2019 and its first stage includes four groups of four teams each and the best three sides of each group will advance to the second round where there will be two pooles of six squads each.

The best three in each group and the best fourth seat of both pooles will earn their ticket to China.

Pooles of the Americas qualifiers to China 2019

Group A: Argentina, Uruguay, Panama and Paraguay.
Group B: Venezuela, Colombia, Chile and a team yet to be defined.
Group C: USA, Puerto Rico, Mexico and Cuba.
Group D: Canada, Dominican Republic, US Virgin Islands and Bahamas.
