Cuba Participates in Regional Study on Education Quality

Havana, May 30 (Prensa Latina) More than 200 Cuban educational centers have participated since Thursday in the Explanatory Comparative Regional Study (ERCE), considered the most important large-scale quality check in Latin America.

The survey, which ends Friday, takes as its reference third and sixth grade students from 251 primary schools in 14 provinces selected by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), according to a report from the Cuban daily Juventud Rebelde.

Paul Torres, national coordinator of the Latin American Laboratory for the Evaluation of the Quality of Education (Llece), explained to the newspaper that the selection of the centers that participate in the study was at random and that the results will serve as evidence of the country’s achievements in fulfilling the Education Agenda of 2030.

This particularity will be kept in the inspections to be carried out in 2023 and 2028, he added.

The researcher, who is also Head of the Central Institute of Pedagogical Sciences added that sixth grade students will also have a science test and an innovation test to assess social-emotional skills.

There will also be questionnaires for teachers, the school principal and parents, he said.

Torres stressed that this is the fourth such study to be held in the region, but the third for Cuba with the assistance of the Latin American Laboratory for Assessment of the Quality of Education. He argued that in the previous ones, Cuba obtained the highest grades among the participating nations in the the school curriculum and levels of education areas.
