Cuba keeps open borders with all countries

Havana, March 13 (Prensa Latina) Cuba is currently keeping open borders with all countries, while intensifying measures to contain the expansion of Covid-19 in the country, a senior Cuban official said.

Dr. Francisco Duran, national director of Hygiene and Epidemiology at the Public Health Ministry, reiterated that surveillance at the country’s airports is being reinforced, mainly with travelers from nine nations: China, Italy, Iran, Japan, South Korea, France, Germany and the United States.

The official explained at a press conference on Friday that all passengers are taken by scanners installed in the air terminals and that customs and immigration personnel are trained to detect suspects.

As for the four cases detected in Cuba, the specialist indicated that they are progressing favorably, while a group of people are isolated waiting for the results of the tests.

In addition to the training of health personnel and hospital centers, it is vital to prepare the public, which already has a perception of risk, the director said.

Similarly, he said that the Cuban government’s plan for dealing with the new coronavirus includes logistical aspects that are guaranteed, as well as the availability of medications to treat the infection in different provinces.

He also insisted on hygienic measures to avoid contagion such as hand washing, the use of disinfectant solutions, avoiding large concentrations, among others that are disseminated by the media and other channels.

Among the actions to be carried out in Cuba, Duran highlighted the public hearings held by representatives of mass organizations such as the Committee for the Defense of the Revolution and the Federation of Cuban Women.
