Cuba guarantees ophthalmological services to its population

Havana, Feb 19 (Prensa Latina) Cuba currently has all necessary services to face the ophthalmological diseases the population have and maintains a National Optical Program.

The coverage is universal and free to the entire population, and is mainly carried out in the healthcare centers.

After the refractive defects, such as myopia, long-sightedness and astigmatism, are checked, which are corrected in principle with the use of eyeglasses, the main cause of reversible blindness in Cuba is the Cataract that, with surgery, can completely recover vision, unless the patient has another eye disease.

Cataract surgeries in Cuba increased in the last five years to more than 33,000 per million inhabitants, a figure indicated by the World Health Organization as a minimum to combat blindness from that cause, the source states.

Glaucoma is the first cause of irreversible blindness in young adults and requires early diagnosis to improve prognosis.

This eye disease is often asymptomatic and the patient does not go to the healthcare institutions, so it is diagnosed in an advanced state.

Due to this, the work in primary healthcare centers and the research of patients who have glaucoma risk factors are essential. If it is detected early, its progression and evolution can be better influenced, with the required medical-surgical treatment.
