Cuba Fosters Actions to Mitigate Drought Effects

Havana, Jul 5 (Prensa Latina) Cuba applies today diverse measures to mitigate the deficit of precipitations affecting the country for more than two years now, among them the execution of new works and the recovery of hydraulic infrastructure.

The president of the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INRH), Inés Maria Chapman, he informed this Tuesday the members of the Commission of Industry, Construction and Energy of the parliament that this type of actions allowed to recover in 2015 more than 150 million cubic meters of water.

During the 7th Ordinary Period of Meetings of the 8th Term of the National Assembly of the Popular Power, which is being held since yesterday in the Convention Center of Havana, Chapman said that the problem of the drought is still not solved, since the country maintains 300 million cubic meters of deficit.

Antonio Rodríguez, vice-president of the Cuban Natural Resources Institute (INRH) stated that this year more than 381 millions in weight were assigned for the execution of new works and the rehabilitation of existing others.

Chapman indicated that in addition to the program dedicated to the recovery of the hydraulic infrastructure, it is necessary to work with more premeditation to keep on diminishing the escapes, which provoke large losses of the resource every year.

She added that between the measurements adopted in the country the irrigation installation is included by dripping and other efficient methods in the agricultural sector, and the improvement of the coverage hidrométrica in the state, residential sectors, underground basins and channels.

Also, cistern cars are making the rearranging of the service of water distribution for cars, the maintenance to the infrastructure, the continuity in the construction of diversions, the reduction of losses to the interior of the housings and the installation of plants desalinizadoras in tourist poles.
