Sancti Spiritus, Cuba, June 5 (Prensa Latina) The results of this central province, worthy for the third time of the World Environment Day event, were highlighted today by Elba Rosa Perez, minister of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA).
Meanwhile, the figure of the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, main promoter of actions to preserve the environment, was present through the musical performances, videos and the speech of speakers.
CITMA president remarked the tough work made following the prolonged drought and the measures adopted for the rational use of water, as well as the fight climate change.
Perez stated that Cuba is seeking alternative sources for water supply, with the use of science and technology.
He stressed that according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) it will be so difficult to end hunger globally by 2030.
Lastly, he congratulated the people of Sancti Spiritus province ‘who have won with their efforts, results and perseverance the possibility to host the national event for World Environment Day.’
The Vice President of the Councils of State and Ministers Ramiro Valdes was awarded with one of the four national environmental prizes.
There were also awarded six provincial prizes, including the Delegation of the Ministry of Tourism, the Caguanes National Park and the Topes de Collantes Gaviota Tourist Resort.
The event was also attended by the Commander of the Cuban Revolution Guillermo Garcia Frias, director of the National Institute for the Flora and Fauna Protection, as well as Myrta Kaulard, Resident Coordinator of the United Nations System and UNDP representative in Cuba.
