Cuba calls for multilateralism at UN and rejects coercive measure

United Nations, Oct 9 (Prensa Latina) Cuba stressed on Friday the importance of multilateralism and the role of the UN in supporting the development of southern countries, and rejected unilateral coercive measures, such as the US blockade.

That was expressed by the second secretary of Cuba’s mission to the United Nations, Juan Miguel Gonzalez, who noted in the Second Committee of the General Assembly that a crystal-clear, open, non-discriminatory and inclusive multilateral system is urgently needed at this time.

‘In a pandemic, unequal, asymmetrically interconnected and interdependent world, facing increasing challenges to the current multilateral order, multilateralism and the role of the United Nations in promoting development are more relevant than ever,’ Gonzalez assured.

Likewise, the Cuban diplomat rejected the unilateral, protectionist and exclusive actions of a few States, which defend strictly national interests, weakening and reducing the multilateral framework and existing institutions.

All that to the detriment of global and collective solutions to the challenges humanity is facing, he underscored.

Cuba works for its development subject to the unfair and criminal US blockade, tightened by the activation of Title III of the Helms-Burton Act and with new measures implemented this year, several of them in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, he pointed out.
