Cuba allows U.S. artist to paint waterfront mural in Havana

Michelle Angela Ortiz will fly to Cuba on a cultural exchange to paint the walking tunnel that connects the Maceo Park in central Havana with the Malecón seawall, reports. Getting permission to do murals on public walls in Cuba is not so easy, yet Havana said yes, and said it fast.

For a muralist, a big wall with nothing on it is like a blank canvas as big as a parking lot.

Michelle Angela Ortiz, a Philadelphia painter, performer, and writer —and a cultural envoy— will fly to Cuba on Sunday to help paint a large mural in Havana. She’ll be there for about eight months on a cultural exchange program organized by the Meridian International Center in Washington, a nongovernmental organization that works with the U.S. State Department.
